Best Blu Ray Burner For Mac

Blu-ray discs are the gold standard in physical video formats right now. You probably have a decent Blu-ray collection of your favorite movies, but without a Blu-ray drive, you can't play them on your Mac. Blu-rays aren't just great for movies; they also make great storage devices for backups or other relevant data as well. If you want to play, read, or write Blu-ray discs with your Mac, you're going to need to start off with an excellent Blu-ray drive. Here are our favorite Blu-ray drives for Mac.

Fast write speeds: Pioneer BDR-XS06

The Pioneer BDR-XS06's 6x write speeds on single-layer and dual-layer discs, and up to 4x max write speeds on quad-layer discs, which makes it one of the faster drives around. Compatible with Mac right out of the box, it also has a quiet mode, so it won't make a ton of noise when you're using the drive.

Don't forget the software

When it comes to playing Blu-rays on your Mac, you're going to need software as well as an external drive, and sometimes that software can be expensive. For that reason, I think the SEA TECH Blu-ray drive is worth a look for people who just want to watch Blu-ray movies.

Of course, if you do plan on using Blu-rays for hard copies of your work, document, files, and general back up, it's probably worth the dishing out the extra cash for a drive like the ASUS BW-16D1X-U. It just has way more power than those slimmer drives and will help you transfer all your data to disc a lot faster.

Blue-Cloner

Blue-Cloner 6
Bypasses anti-piracy encryptions
Makes 1:1 copies that are identical to the original
Only burns to BD-R type Blu-ray discs
Compressing to smaller-capacity Blu-ray discs can take up to 10 hours

Blue-Cloner is the best Blu-ray copy program we reviewed because it makes copying and burning backups of your discs simple. It speeds through the copying process, and the quality of 1:1 copies is perfect.

Using this program, you can select exactly what you want to copy. For example, you can copy only the movie portion or selected chapters, as well as split your movie between two discs or make a full 1:1 copy. It also lets you pick the language and appearance for your subtitles. Furthermore, you can keep or eliminate special features and menus and adjust the compression rate of those features to speed up copying.
The software has two interfaces: Express and Expert. The Express mode is simple and makes copying discs very easy. The Expert interface has more features, including those that let you split discs and compress movies to fit onto smaller-capacity discs. But it is still easy to navigate and use, and you can switch between the two interfaces with a click of a button.

BurnAware

BurnAware Premium
BurnAware Professional
Easy enough for anyone to use
Can extract audio from video files
Doesn’t have compression options

BurnAware is designed for basic disc copying. You can use it to extract audio tracks from CDs, recover data from unreadable discs, and of course, copy Blu-rays.

The program is easy enough for anyone to use – you can start copying discs within minutes, even if you aren’t very tech-savvy.
There are three versions of the program: Free, Premium and Professional. Of the three, the software’s Premium version is the best option for the average user, and it costs just $19 a year. This is a good deal; however, other programs only require a one-time payment to own the software outright. The free version doesn’t have disc-to-disc copying capabilities, and the pro version caters to business professionals.
This Blu-ray copy software can burn data or videos to discs, and exceptionally large files can be spread over several discs. Also, if you have a used rewritable Blu-ray disc, you can erase its existing files and use BurnAware to burn on it again, something other Blu-ray copy software can’t do.
BurnAware analyzes the amount of data you need to burn and efficiently distributes it so you don’t waste space. With the Premium version, you can also burn in multiple sessions, so you can add to discs that aren’t full later.

Leawo Blu-ray Copy

Leawo Blu-ray Copy 7
Easy to use
Saves a disc’s ISO file (disc image) to your computer for archiving
No compression tools

Leawo Blu-ray Copy is Blu-ray to Blu-ray copy software that decrypts, rips, copies and burns Blu-ray data onto your PC's hard drive or blank discs.

This is one of the easiest applications to use. The software decrypts anti-piracy protections and removes region codes automatically, so you don't have to find third-party applications to do the job. Furthermore, Leawo Blu-ray Copy is set up to deal with future encryption issues – it accesses the internet for solutions each time you load a new Blu-ray movie.
Copies made with Leawo Blu-ray Copy are of superb quality, and they retain all the fine details found on the original Blu-ray discs. The software only makes 1:1 copies, so quality loss never occurs. However, you don’t have the ability to compress commercial discs to fit onto smaller-capacity blanks, something only our top pick can do.
Leawo Blu-ray Copy has limited copy customization options. You can only make an identical copy or copy just the feature presentation on the disc – our top pick, Blue-Cloner, also lets you choose which content to copy and perform compressions. When you copy DVDs with Leawo Blu-ray Copy, you can pick and choose which elements to include, but not when you copy Blu-rays.

Express Burn

Express Burn Plus CD Burner
Express Burn Plus CD + DVD Authoring
Express Burn Plus CD + DVD + Blu-Ray Authoring
It’s one of the few Blu-ray copy programs available for Mac.
You can’t copy commercial discs protected by anti-piracy encryptions.

Finding decent Blu-ray copy software for Macintosh is sometimes a chore. This is a largely due to the fact that Apple phased out optical drives from their computers years ago.

So, not only do you need to invest in Blu-ray copy software, but also an external hard drive to burn with. For the software side, Express Burn is the best Mac-compatible option there is.
Express Burn is a complete optical disc solution. Not only can you copy Blu-ray discs, but also create new movie discs from scratch, complete with menus and extra features, as well as data discs.
And it’s not just Blu-ray software, you can also copy and create CDs and DVDs. Additionally, you have the ability to create disc images (ISO files) that you can use to burn new discs well into the future.

Fastest Copy Times

Aurora Blu-ray Copy

Aurora Blu-ray Player for Mac
Aurora Blu-ray Player Suite (Mac & Windows)
It’s lightning fast.

We timed how long it takes each program to make a 1:1 copy of a Blu-ray movie. When we were done, Aurora Blu-ray Copy was the winner by a mile.

The slowest time we recorded was an hour and a half, while our top choice took 48 minutes. Aurora Blu-ray Copy performed the same task in 13 minutes. And the quality of the copy is identical to the original source disc.
Because this software is free, it naturally has some drawbacks compared to paid programs. For example, there’s no ability to compress commercial Blu-ray movies onto smaller-capacity blank discs or DVDs nor can you pick and choose exactly what to copy such as just the main movie or extra features. You have to make an exact copy and nothing else.

Why Trust Us

We’ve been reviewing the best Blu-ray copy software since 2011. In that time, we’ve considered dozens of programs, copied hundreds of discs, and watched hours and hours of footage.

Our testing methodology was painstaking. We devoted a significant amount of time to inspecting the small details in copied footage to ascertain the quality of every copy. We also paid very close attention to each application’s interface, workflow and usability

As we used each program, we inspected its tools and tested how useful and reliable they are. We timed how long it takes each application to create an exact copy, compress content and save a disc’s image to a computer.

These data points, plus the individual experiences of our reviewers, informed our reviews and top choices. Reviewers held each program to the standard of “would I recommend this to a close friend?” If the answer was “no” for any product, it didn’t rank well.

How We Tested

When we evaluated the best Blu-ray copiers, we subjected each program to a battery of tests.

Quality Tests
We used each program to make an exact copy of a commercial Blu-ray disc. As part of our tests, we asked video experts to examine the quality of each copy we created to search for imperfections, such as pixelation, compression artifact, motion-blur and other defects. All the products we reviewed make perfect copies with no quality loss whatsoever.

Only one of the programs can compress commercial Blu-rays to fit onto smaller-capacity discs or DVDs. Again, our video experts watched these compressed copies and concluded that the degradation in picture quality was minimal. However, there were other issues that created inconsistent results – if you use Blu-ray copy software for compression, expect to burn a disc or two before you get the results you want.

Best Blu Ray Drive For Macbook Pro

Timing Tests
Because Blu-ray files are so massive, making copies is time-consuming – especially when you make a disc-to-disc copy. We found it takes up to five hours to complete a full disc-to-disc copy. Similarly, compressing a Blu-ray movie to fit onto a smaller blank disc can take up to 10 hours. This is true no matter which Blu-ray copy software you choose.

Once an ISO file is on your computer, it takes significantly less time to burn it on another disc. We found that burning a new copy of a Blu-ray disc from a disc image takes an average of 45 minutes. So, if you plan to make multiple discs, it’s best to burn from an extracted ISO file rather than make individual disc-to-disc copies.

Ease of Use Tests
Blu-ray disc copying is a technical, and often confusing, undertaking. The best Blu-ray copy software distills the process down to its simplest form. As such, we evaluated each product’s interface and workflow. We tracked how easy it is to start the copying process, extract disc images, compress content and burn new discs from an ISO file. Our results show that the programs we reviewed generally have simple processes, but some are geared more toward tech-savvy individuals, and casual user may experience a bit of a learning curve using them.

Key Features of Blu-ray Copy Software

We also used the following criteria find the best Blu-ray copy software:

How Much Does Blu-ray Copy Software Cost?

You can pick up decent Blu-ray copy software free from several sources, but you won’t get the extra features that make the best programs stand out. The paid programs we reviewed cost $20 to $120. However, in our experience, you generally get the most out of your purchase at around $60. Anything above that hard to justify since there are cheaper and better options.

Copy
Before any Blu-ray copy software can start duplicating, it must first bypass the anti-piracy encryptions found on nearly every commercial Blu-ray disc. Most products we reviewed can do this, and those that don't are limited to making copies of unencrypted discs. This drastically limits the application's usefulness.

The best Blu-ray copy software not only makes disc-to-disc copies, but it also extracts and saves disc images to your computer. You should also be able to burn an extracted ISO file onto a blank disc without needing the original.

Output
All the products we reviewed created an exact copy of our test Blu-ray disc. So, no matter which product you choose, you can make exact 1:1 copies of your movies.

Blank Blu-ray discs come in three sizes: 25GB, 50GB and 100GB. Each is more expensive than the last. A spindle of 25GB blank discs costs about $50, while 50GB and 100GB versions cost $100 or more. Since most commercial Blu-ray discs are 50GB or 100GB, making exact copies of your movie library can be expensive.

Best Blu-ray Burner For Mac

The best applications can compress larger commercial discs onto smaller-capacity, less-expensive discs. It’s also useful when you can shrink your Blu-rays to fit on DVDs, especially if you want to watch movies where a Blu-ray player isn’t available. However, since compression often causes quality loss, know that you're not getting all the Blu-ray goodness from the original disc when using this option.

Customization
The best Blu-ray copiers don't limit you to making rote copies of your discs. For example, our top pick, Blue-Cloner, lets you pick and choose which content you want to copy and burn onto a new disc. This is useful if you only want to copy a single special feature onto its own disc.

One of the most useful tools is a 'Movie Only' option, which strips away everything on a disc except for the feature presentation. It is a great way to fit a Blu-ray movie onto a smaller blank disc; however, you may lose important features such as menus, chapter selection, subtitles and extra audio tracks.

Another feature worth mentioning lets you split the content found on a commercial disc onto two separate blank discs. This is a useful if you want to burn everything on your Blu-rays without paying more for high-capacity blank discs.

Help & Support
Each program we reviewed is relatively simple and easy enough for anyone to use, regardless of computer skill level. In the rare case you need assistance, you can consult the FAQs section on the software's official website – all the programs we tested offer this resource.

If the FAQs don't have the answer you're looking for, you can email the company and will usually receive a response within 24 to 72 hours. Some companies offer live chat on their websites, which you can use to talk to a customer service representative immediately.

Several companies that make Blu-ray copy software have official social media accounts. Facebook and Twitter are the most popular platforms, and you can contact reps on them for solutions to simple problems.

Best Free Blu-ray Copy Software

If you don't want to pay to back up and copy Blu-ray discs, you should check out Aurora Blu-ray Copy. It’s the most basic program we reviewed and the simplest to use. It produces exact 1:1 copies of Blu-ray discs as well as every other program we reviewed. You can make a direct disc-to-disc copy or save the Blu-ray's ISO (disk image) to your hard drive for archiving or viewing in Blu-ray player software.

However, it doesn't include some features we look for. For example, it can't compress a Blu-ray movie to fit on a smaller-capacity blank disc or compress it down to burn onto a DVD. You also can’t pick and choose which content to copy or split content between multiple discs. For those features, you need a program like Blue-Cloner.
