Hi,

If you have a Mac lying around, you can plug the drive into a Mac and back up the files. If you only have Windows systems available, you can use HFSExplorer to copy files from the drive onto your Windows system drive or another drive. If you work solely on a Mac, but need to send files to someone working on a PC, your external hard drive needs to be set up for both operating systems. Let’s take a look at the different types of formats, and which are best for video production. Here are some suggestions on preparing the external hard drive for best performance with Aperture. Many external hard drives come pre-formatted as FAT 32. This is a native Windows file format that can be read by Mac OS X, but is not ideal for use with Aperture. – If you try to format an external USB device smaller than 32 GB, you will see all the options. – If you try to format and external USB device larger than 32 GB, you will only see NTFS and exFAT. Now that you know this, your final choice is much easier since you have to choose from a limited set. Another one among the options available for best external hard drive for mac, this one was introduced at Macworld Conference & Expo in 2008 while its 5 th generation came to the scene in 2013 along with 6 th gen AirPort Extreme. As for the latest release, it was named Airport Time Capsule.

I have a new 2TB WD My Passport Ultra and I want to be able to read and write from Mac and PC. My main objective is to be able to access and edit videos and pics on both systems, thought I mostly use Mac.

What is my best option? Should I format in exFAT or in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Should I choose the later and install MacDrive 7 on the PC I may use? From my searches, Mac OS Extended is recommended for Adobe Lightroom users: why is that so?

I may have files bigger than 4GB (which excludes FAT32) and I am mostly using Mac but when I travel, I may use a PC and not necessarily with an internet connection, which excludes the Cloud option (except for backup). I will format the external hard drive on my Mac (Disk Utility).

Thank you!

Microsoft has launched five versions of NTFS: v1.0 released with Windows NT 3.1, v1.2 with Windows 3.51, v3.0 with Windows 2000, v3.1 and v5.0 with Windows XP. The latest version includes many features like disk usage quotas, link tracking distribution, reparse points, file-level encryption and sparse file support.
